NHS Tayside staff honoured as everyday heroes at national awards ceremony

Outstanding members of NHS Tayside were celebrated at Scotland’s Health Awards 2024, with staff winning in two categories at the event at Edinburgh’s O2 Academy.

The Mobile Dental Van won the Tackling Health Inequalities Award, while Pitlochry Community Hospital ward clerk Alison Stephenson was recognised as an Unsung Hero, highlighting NHS Tayside’s ongoing commitment to compassionate, inclusive care.

Known for her unwavering support to patients and colleagues alike, Alison is often seen going above and beyond her role – filling in as a healthcare assistant, assisting with IT, and fostering a collaborative environment within her team.

Alison said, “I think everybody at Pitlochry Community Hospital is doing exactly the same as I do. It’s amazing to receive the award and I want to thank them all.”

The Mobile Dental Van exemplifies an innovative and compassionate approach to tackling health inequalities by providing essential dental care to vulnerable and marginalised populations across Tayside. By eliminating the barriers of fixed appointments and transportation issues, the van ensures that dental care is accessible when and where it is needed most. The service collaborates effectively with third-sector partners like Parish Nursing and Street Soccer to create an integrated support network for its patients.

Deputy clinical dental director Gillian Elliot said, “It is wonderful for the Mobile Dental Van to be recognised on this national stage.

“The van is a lifeline for individuals experiencing homelessness, substance misuse, and other vulnerabilities that make accessing traditional dental care challenging.”

Chief Executive Nicky Connor said, “Congratulations to Alison Stephenson and the Mobile Dental Van team for their remarkable contributions.

“Their dedication embodies NHS Tayside’s commitment to delivering person centred, high-quality care to patients across Tayside.”
