New consultant oncologist welcomed to Tayside

Dr Christopher Merrick will be joining the oncology team in Ninewells, taking up post as a consultant in colorectal cancer.

Dr Merrick joins the team having completed his undergraduate and postgraduate training and speciality training in clinical oncology in NHS Tayside.

Dr Merrick will hold a consultant post in colorectal cancer and will help develop the Stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) for oligometastatic disease to treat cancer patients. SABR is a precise form of high dose radiotherapy generally used on small, well-defined tumours, which requires fewer sessions. The treatment limits the impact on surrounding organs to minimise adverse side effects. The service has recently received almost £214,000 of funding from Scottish Government to develop the service in Tayside.

Dr Merrick will also work with the University of Dundee in helping develop and deliver the undergraduate medical school curriculum for oncology.

Speaking about his new role, Dr Merrick said, “I'm thrilled to be joining the excellent team of hard-working oncology consultants who have been so valuable and supportive to me throughout my training here in Tayside.

“I'm excited to be involved in helping develop SABR services, providing further treatment options for patients with metastatic disease and will endeavour to offer the best care possible to cancer patients in Tayside.”

Dr Hannah Lord, Co-Clinical Lead at the Tayside Cancer Centre said, “I am delighted that Dr Merrick will be joining the team. I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to Dr Merrick’s training here in Tayside and we look forward to working with him as we develop the Tayside Cancer Centre.”
