The University of Dundee has been named Scotland’s top university at The Herald Higher Education Awards.
Dundee took the top prize, Higher Educational Institution of the Year, at the ceremony in Glasgow last night and also walked away with a further four awards recognising the impact of staff and students.
The Lifetime Achievement accolade went to Professor Sir Philip Cohen, the UK’s most cited scientist in the field of biochemistry, a powerhouse of fundraising, and mentor to other outstanding scientists. On receiving the award, Philip remarked, “I’m just having fun!”
The Outstanding Contribution from a Student category was won by Law student Cameron Irons for his incredible work around student welfare. Dundee’s School of Business received the Enhancing Student Learning Award for their work to develop digital marking skills for a sustainable future.
The Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science was recognised with an Innovative Use of Technology award for its implementation of extended reality in forensic science.
Dundee also received a further two commendations. PhD student Vicky Armstrong was shortlisted for Outstanding Contribution from a Student in recognition of her Art at the Start project, while the School of Medicine’s Immersion Room, which simulates high-pressure environments to challenge students during their training, was nominated for Innovative Use of Technology.
Professor Iain Gillespie, Principal and Vice Chancellor of the University, said, “This is a great result for our university and a testament to the efforts of all staff and students. Well done and thank you to you all. I am hugely grateful and immensely proud of all that has been done.
“The fact that the main award was accompanied by a host of individual and team awards emphasises not only the quality but also the breadth of our impact, including both a Lifetime Achievement Award for Professor Sir Philip Cohen, and one for Outstanding Contribution from a Student for Cameron Irons.
