New Director of Research and Development appointed

Professor Russell Petty has been appointed as NHS Tayside’s Director of Research and Development (R&D) and Director of Tayside Medical Science Centre (TASC)*.

Professor Petty is a graduate of the University of Dundee’s School of Medicine and brings vast experience to the post of Director of R&D after 28 years as a clinical, translational and laboratory-based researcher in the NHS and university settings around the world.

Professor Petty returned to the University as Professor of Medical Oncology in 2015 and is a recognised international research leader in oesophageal and gastric cancer.  He has contributed significantly to the evidence that underpins the standards of care for these cancers and has provided improvements in healthcare outcomes for these hard-to-treat diseases.

Professor Petty said, “I feel privileged to be able to take up the posts of Director of R&D and Director of TASC.  We have a vibrant and creative environment here in Tayside which enables world-leading research and innovation and ensures that, through clinical trials, we are able to offer the very best treatment opportunities to our patients.

“Research undertaken here in Tayside benefits the people of Tayside but also patients everywhere. I am looking forward to offering patients opportunities to take part in research and, in doing so, address Scotland’s healthcare challenges now and in the future.”

*TASC is a collaboration of NHS Tayside and the University of Dundee which supports the delivery of high-quality research to provide patients with access to new treatments, interventions and medicines in a challenging regulatory environment.
